The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members – on an international scale – who have successfully applied innovative building design in areas of occupant comfort, indoor air quality, and energy conservation. Their designs in corporate ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and IAQ. Performance is proven through one year’s actual, verifiable operating data.
The purpose of the ASHRAE Technology Awards is to:
- Recognize ASHRAE members who design and/or conceive innovative technological concepts proven through actual operating data;
- Communicate innovative systems design to other ASHRAE members;
- Highlight technological achievements of ASHRAE to others, including associated professionals and societies worldwide, as well as building and facility owners.
Categories and Awards
Each year the Society may present awards in six categories:
- Commercial Buildings (New, Existing, EBCx)
- Institutional Buildings (New, Existing, EBCx)
- Health Care Facilities (New, Existing,)
- Industrial Facilities or Processes (New, Existing, EBCx)
- Public Assembly (New, Existing, EBCx)
- Residential
A first place, second place, and honorable mention recipient may be selected for each category. The Award of Engineering Excellence and the Exemplary Decarbonization Recognition are given at the judges’ discretion.
Nominations
The ASHRAE Technology Awards has three levels of competition – Chapter, Region, and Society. Those interested in submitting a Technology Award entry should first reach out to their Chapter and Region to confirm the process and deadlines (if you need assistance contacting your Chapter or Region, please reach out to Rhiannon Masterson at rmasterson@ashrae.org). Entries that succeed at their Regional competition then qualify for submission to the Society competition.
All Society-level entries must be submitted by June 1 each year.
Entry Form
The entry form also includes the following:
- Instructions for Regional and Society entries (page 2)
- General instructions and guidelines (page 6)
- Detailed judging criteria (page 6-7)
- Helpful hints (page 7)
- FAQ (page 7-8)
Judging
Society-level entries are reviewed by an eight-person judging panel comprised of ASHRAE Members from around the globe. These judges review each individual entry based on the following criteria:
- Energy Efficiency
- Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and Thermal Comfort
- Innovation
- Operation and Maintenance
- Cost Effectiveness
- Environmental Impact
- Quality of Presentation
Additional details regarding judging criteria are listed on pages 6-7 of the Tech Award Entry Form.
Award Presentation
First place winners and the Award of Engineering Excellence recipient will receive their plaques in-person during the Plenary award ceremony at the ASHRAE Winter Conference, which is always held on Saturday during the Conference from 3:15-5:30pm local time.
Second place winners, honorable mention winners, and the Exemplary Decarbonization Recognition recipient will be mailed their plaques.
